A wide-ranging publishing experience

Patrice Salib's career at Reymann involves publishing management and preparation for printing productions of several million copies, in rotogravure and rotary offset. At this scale, variations, corrections and manufacturing adjustments must follow shared rules.

Rey-Active was the point of contact between customers, advertising, seizure, studio, engraving and production. The platform linked page access to product data, visuals and processing required to produce them.

The railway as a preparation tool

The catalog is prepared in files, supports, pages and products. The railway makes it possible to distribute content, enter texts, find a product and associate its visuals. Managing several references under the same visual is one of those details that really matters to users.

Preparation in advance reduces editing rework: complete data, defined templates, ready layout masks and visuals available. A catalog should not be generated a few minutes after the images have been clipped; these operations have their own dependencies and deadlines.

Corrections and rights linked to the stages of the file

Annotations, enhancements, BAT corrections and validation of pages organize dialogue with stakeholders. Locking a page determines what can still be modified or made accessible at a given stage.

The Rey’actif chain included automatic actions linked to milestones: end of railway assembly, end of bonus corrections, BAT 1 and BAT 2. The planning date could thus trigger an unlocking. This example shows that calendar, working rights and editorial status formed the same process.

The browser linked to production applications

An editorial platform must dialogue with the tools where the files are located and where the layout is carried out. The following environments include connectors between web applications and desktop applications, view services and event exchanges.

The InDesign document, its ICML texts, the PIM data and the images are not four independent sets. A modification must be able to reach the page concerned and the expected generation. Tracking the INDD document and its PDFs helps find the actual available status.

Retrieve annotations and warn the right stakeholders

Developments included extracting annotations from Aproove PDFs with their texts, images and attachments. This recovery made it possible to put the information from the correction circuit back into a chain that can be used by the applications.

An event notification service grouped information by user and distinguished internal, external and administrator profiles. It included immediate notifications, attachments and production alerts. The collaboration therefore concerned both the circulation of corrections and the presentation of the page.

User requests transformed into monitored treatments

Behind viewing a page are services: InDesign Server, PDF generation and assembly, image engines, job queues and indexing. Long operations are managed and monitored rather than executed as a single opaque action.

The configuration of Dalim TWIST from Rey’actif and the return of progress and status to the platform were part of this integration. The user could request a result from the folder, while the production services had the parameters necessary to execute it.

From screen validation to printed proof

The circuit continued until proofing: selection of pages and color layers, choice of support, printer and tray, then generation of the proof. A quad output and a spot tone output on layer could belong to the same request.

This continuity between data, layout, validation and manufacturing is one of the major contributions of the Reymann experience: designing the platform as a complete editorial production system, with its teams, its exceptions and its deadlines.
