Produce multiple editions without losing consistency

The La Grande Récré and Starjouet productions combined French and Belgian versions, but also Moroccan, Réunion and DOM-TOM versions. Catalogs could be in production simultaneously, with prices, references and highlights specific to each edition.

The technical challenge was to maintain the links between the product, its texts, its visuals and its layout blocks, while allowing local adaptations. A product change put forward had to be examined on the scale of the other versions still open.

Conditional texts, ICML and InDesign text module

The channel used conditional texts and InDesign assignments. Developments in the text module had to preserve tags and fields: removing visible content should not make the structure necessary for exchanges disappear.

The diagnosis focused in particular on empty fields, the retention of XML tags and the ICML structure when rearchiving an assignment. This knowledge of InDesign formats and behavior made it possible to prepare corrections with the developers and to explain best practices to the editing teams.

Templates, generation and offshore work

The templates and the railway prepared the generation, then the pages were taken up by the assembly teams. Offshore shipments combined documents, resources and instructions, with deadlines specific to each catalog.

The technical meetings also focused on the rules of the charter, the limits of manual modifications and the management of highlights. It was necessary to give internal, external and independent stakeholders a common understanding of the chain.

Photo library, chromia and version control

Visuals were not limited to their presence on a page: access to the photo library, updates, retouching, chroma, assignments and previews conditioned the production. The checks had to compare the result of the platform to the PDF produced.

Reports of fundamental differences, price style or typography in a version fueled the diagnosis. Processing needed to take into account conditional content, links and assignments, rather than just fixing the final PDF.

From printed catalog to web content

The deliverables combined JPEG pages exported one by one and square product visuals of 1,200 × 1,200 pixels. The nomenclature, the scope of the images and the calendar varied depending on the brand and the edition.

Other deliverables were requested in the form of high-definition page-by-page PDFs, without prices, or unflattened PDFs for digital exploitation. It was necessary to prepare material adapted to the distribution channel while maintaining its relationship with printed production.

Snippets and archives in the long term

The folders also included reusable layout resources, whose presence on disk had to remain consistent with what the platform found. The archives of catalogs, visuals and logos were useful for season resumptions.

This experience gives concrete scope to version management: finding the correct original, the correct assignment and the correct edition remains essential after the first publication.

This case study presents the experience of Patrice Salib, founder of Dtouch, acquired at Reymann with the agency's teams and its development and production partners.
